In July 2014 THE BREWSTER TRUST completed its “School Programme 2014”, a football initiative in Barbados in conjunction with the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Football League (BSSFL) and in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation and Arsenal FC – the motto: “Football is Fun”.

The elements

The year started with a coaching course for the Secondary Schools’ coaches at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, 34 participants registered representing 19 secondary and tertiary schools.

Weekly coaching courses at individual schools followed, the schools had the choices “Curriculum Sessions”, Double Club which includes an academic part combining general literacy and football, after school programme or a community session on Saturday mornings.

27 schools took part during the second and third term of the last academic year; 38 sessions or over 64 hours of football a week have been necessary to accommodate the requests – conducted by eight Arsenal FC coaches for a total of 19 weeks.

Statistics

In total 715 coaching sessions had been scheduled at the individual schools, 7’495 students participated in the programme with a female quota of 15.85%; in average 16 students a session. Unfortunately, the high cancellation quota of 31.89% reduced the opportunities for the students. Only six of the 27 participating schools had six cancelations or less during the full 19 weeks, two schools conducted all scheduled sessions. Six schools cancelled more than half of the sessions; the highest cancellation quota a school was 66.67%. The highest students’ participation in average a session was 32.
